Rubber band G2G for Filter Bags - Mushroom Cultivation (2024)

I hope to repost this soon with pictures. The basic idea is to take your pressured-cooked bag of grain and rubber band the bag above the grain. Place the bag in a clean tub in a clean area and all the usual precautions. With a gloved hand, crumble up your cakes, make a fist with the crumbles while the other hand cuts the top off of your bag. Once open, carefully push your fist through the pinch point caused by the rubber band and scatter the crumbles evenly over the top, careful not to disturb the substrate too much. Remove your hand as carefully as possible, allowing the rubber band to re-close behind it. Have your Lysol ready to spray the exposed areas of inner bag and your sealer (or duct tape) ready to re-close. Be careful not to disturb the bag. In theory, only the top layer should be exposed but since its covered with healthy mycelium that gets to work quickly, contam shouldn't be a concern.

I work in a 'still air' box (glovebox) and some of the lucky guys work in front of flow hoods for their G2G transfers.

Your ideas are interesting.

Are you using a BRF cake as your original spawn?

Thanks for the kudos. I've been reading for a long time and this is the first thing I've had to add.

I've been working with limited time and resources so until I have the luxury of a glovebox I have been trying to be as resourceful as possible in my sterility.

I spawn with either WBS or popcorn from the same bags. I had a lot of trouble with anaerobic bacteria when trying to make large grain bags so I innoc fairly small bags with multispore and rubberband transfer to a larger grain. My theory is to innoc as many small bags as possible and transfer the winners to the big bags.

my still air box was under $10 ... so that's pretty cost effective for the piece of mind it can give you.

I do qt. jars of grain spawn that colonize quickly. I've got the jars and I am set-up for that kind of small scale stuff.
