We all know that one of the best loved Christmas songs of all time (although it's not strictly meant only to be played at Christmas) is Fairytale of New York recorded by The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl.
Just a pity as yet another year goes by (Kirsty was killed on December 18th 2000) that still no one has been held responsible for her death.
For those who don't know, Kirsty was scuba diving with her two sons when she was struck by a speed boat, in an area it was not permitted. The last thing she did was push one of her sons out it's way before being mutilated by its propellors.
She was there legally, on holiday, in a place she loved, Cozumel Bay in Mexico.
She was also only 41.
Some progress has been made so far, but the biggest hurdle was the fact that the man who owned the boat was fabulously wealthy, and jailing him would cost business's too much!
Our government needs to 'extractus digitus' and get something done!
Maybe if Kirsty was here illegally, and shot dead perhaps Mr T. Blair would do something a bit quicker.
I do speak in anger but with a sincere passion for one of the greatest singer / songwriters this country has ever produced. She was thought very highly of by anyone who knew her.
My thoughts today are with her elderly mother Jean, and I'd love her to see the day there will be 'Justice for Kirsty', Kirsty's sons Jamie and Louis, her brother Hamish, her sons father Steve Lillywhite, and all those others who knew her personally.

agree with everything, if your rich you will escape justice, lets just hope something as nasty happens to the scum who killed kirsty as the justice system in mexico failed Ms McColls family.

I'm not really bothered how long the thread is, I just want justice for her. I couldn't let this day go by without mentioning it on here. I purposely waited 'til shortly after midnight to post something on the anniversary of her death.
No one should have to wait for such a long time for something to be done. I have a badge which her mother, Jean, sent me with a handwritten note attached. I treasure them. The bird on the badge is a tidied up version that Kirsty drew when she was about 10.
Even Kirsty's dad (a fellow Scot) was a well known singer mailnly in folk circles though. He wrote 'The First Time That Ever I Saw Her Face' which someone put back in the charts a year or so ago.

It's an open forum in a free country, allegedly. I was only voicing my opinion, you don't have to agree, but the subject has been brought up before regarding the way this government has almost ignored Kirsty's family's plight, but jumped in to help famillies of others who shouldn't have been here. I don't want to go off topic, but some illegal's in this country have committed horrendous crimes and been better treated than UK citizens that have been murdered etc abroad.
Let's get back to discussing Kirsty shall we, I started the thread in her treasured memory, not to start written warfare.....

I'm so glad you posted about Kirsty. She was a very special person with a unique talent.
My gut feeling though is that since nothing can ever bring her back to us,its best to just let it go now.
All I want to do here is quote my wise old grandmother.'He won't die peacefully. The Lord is watching.'
Whether you have any religious beliefs or not,I've never ever known her wise words to be wrong.
RIP,Kirsty.

Before I go to bed, if your mother, daughter, sister, whatever was killed in any circumstance, especially as Kirsty was, no amount of time is enough before 'letting go'. Otherwise her death could be classed virtually as legal murder or manslaughter.
It should never have taken this long in the first place. On Mothers Day (I think 2002) the Mexican government offered her mother compensation for her loss.
It equalled to about £25!!
I posted the link for anyone who wants to go back to at least 2000 and the last update was on the 16th as I type this.

He's not attacking illegal immigrants, he's attacking Tony Blair.
I saw the documentary last year and I thought it was disgraceful that her mother had to be the one to try and find the truth about what happened.
I hope Kirsty's family get justice.

I do think you have misunderstood me.
I'm genuinely sorry for not making it clearer.I just feel (and I'm a mother, daughter and a sister) that since nothing will ever bring Kirsty back,it would be easier for those left bereft to just accept that.

I had no idea it was the anniversary but was thinking about her last night when I saw that Fairytale of New York was No 1 in the VH1 viewers vote for xmas songs.
I saw the documentary when it was on too and felt desperately sorry for Kirsty's family.

Apology accepted, but I was also basing my answer on the fact I lost a daughter eight years ago next March, different circumstances and she was a baby. She shapes the person I am in the charity work I do to help raise money for baby life saving equipment, and to me one of the worst things people can say is 'move on' etc. If it wasn't for what has happened in my past, I wouldn't be planning part of my future. I also volunteer to counsell bereaved parents, so moving is difficult when you meet bereaved teenagers as well as older couples.
Kirsty's mother has 41 wonderful years of memories with an incredibly beatiful human who didn't deserve to die as she did. I however am in a constant state of 'what if'.
I have read plaudits from the greatest singer songwriters of modern times including Bono, David Byrne, Morrissey and others including one of her main inspirations, Ray Davies.
Some of the testimonials can be read in the sleevenotes of the album 'Galore', which if memory serves me right was released in 1995, I don't have it to hand, but I think she jokes about getting these comments, and she 'isn't dead yet!'
Cheers Kirsty for providing part of the soundtrack to so many peoples lives xx x

I just assumed that justice was done. I heard about the terrible accident and must say I am shocked that absolutely nothing has been done about it. Especially as she was an established star you think somehow the police would take it more seriously, not that this is right but we all know it happens!! Obvously with the media attention etc I thought that guy would be in prison by now. How dreadful for her two boys to have to witness something like that. I am glad you have posted this on the forum as I am sure a lot of people are unaware that the British Government have done nothing to force the Mexican government to prosecute this man.

I doubt that very much JMO but I would want to see justice served. I don't think I could just 'accept' it

My Grand-dad is good friends with one of the instrumentalists in the Pogues and met Kirsty on a few occasions, in Ireland, as the Pogues and Kirsty obviously still kept in touch.
I can't remember the instrumentalists name for the life of me (I'm getting Wood though, but I could be wrong) and he was obviously devastated at the death and has never been satisfied with how its been handled, and the fact that her family are still suffering after all these years.
Kirsty had a great voice, and its about time justice was served.

Although in a different league, it's slightly shocking that millions every August the 16th fall down in tears to commemorate the man who died a virtual junkie, yet every year forget someone who died a few weeks later and did almost everything he could, plus he out sold and out acted him (Bing Crosby) and yet someone as precious as Kirsty who died the way she did and has her work covered in different genres is vitually consigned to oblivion.
As much as I liked Elvis, I prefer to remember that date as 'Elvis having the honour of dying on Madonna's 19th birhtday'.
Like Mrs M Thatcher who didn't see fit to include the biggest mass murder on British soil in over 300 hundred years in her memoirs, I think it's totally disgusting that people we cast a vote to govern us can't find the time to justify the death of an innocent 41 year old mother of two on holiday.
Without going OT, Kirsty rebelled against the woman who chose not to include the Lockerbie disaster as part of her 'life' in politics. The 259 lives falling 31,000 feet and 11 on the ground, some consumed in burning avaition fuel, were not important enough for her book!
Angry. yes I am!

With respect, I actually agree with what you're saying. Kirsty McColl was a sublime talent and her death was pretty much overlooked in the British media. She was though, a fiercely private woman who didn't want or need to court publicity and as such, because she didn't use the media to her own ends, did not get the coverage she deserved. There will always be celebrities who get more admiration and coverage than others, irrespective of talent.
It sucks but there we go.
