The Spanish verb divertirsemeans to have fun or to have a good time. Divertirse is a reflexiveverb—it is accompanied by thereflexive pronouns(me, te, se, nos, os, se). Also, divertirse is an -ir stem-changing verb, which means that in many conjugations, when the vowel e of the verb's root is stressed, it turns into ie. For example, yo me divierto (I have fun). In other conjugations, the e changes simply to i, like in ella se divirtió (she had fun).
This articles includes divertirse conjugations in the present, past and future indicative, the present and past subjunctive, the imperative, and other verb forms.
Using Divertir and Divertirse
Used reflexively, divertirse means to have fun or to have a good time. However, this verb can also be used non-reflexively, as divertir. In that case, it is a transitive verb that means to entertain or amuse someone. For example, El payaso divierte a los niños (The clown amuses the children). You will notice that when divertir is used, it is usually talking about amusing people, and for that reason, you must include the preposition a, also called the personal a, between the verb and the direct object.
Something else to note about the verb divertir is that its past participle, divertido, is used as an adjective that simply means "fun". For example, La fiesta fue muy divertida (The party was a lot of fun).
